Tis the Season to be ‘Single’
It’s that time of year again! Gifts to buy, holiday cards to get out, parties and gatherings of all sorts! The only thing you hope for is avoiding Grandma who will try pinning you down to ask when you are getting married. Here are some tips for singles on how to survive the holidays:
- Get some zzzz’s. Make sure to relax and get an extra hour of sleep to be ready for all of the holiday happenings. You’re more likely to be less stressed if you have some extra shut eye.
- Exercise. Stay trip and fit even after that extra piece of pumpkin pie. Being single can make some people eat more over the holidays and some not eat at all. Enjoy yourself but don’t gorge everything in sight.
- Spa Day. Arrange to have a massage, facial, manicure or other spa treatment. These are wonderful stress relievers. They are especially nice late in the day at the end of a hectic few days. You never know who you might see while you are back in town for the holidays – maybe that high school hunk you used to dream about! You want to look your best.
- Online Shopping. Save time and money and do all of your holiday shopping online. Most places will ship for free if you order before Thanksgiving.
- Do try and attend all of the holiday parties you are invited too – you may find yourself under the mistletoe with someone new! These parties are a great opportunity to mingle and have fun.
- Do avoid using food, alcohol or drugs to cope with holiday stress. Nothing is worse than the feelings that follow the use (or wrong use) of these things. This way of coping leads to depression, low self-esteem and a greater sense of isolation and despair.
- Look for ways to give to or do for others. Feeling useful and appreciated will provide a great boost to your holiday spirits. Check out local volunteer opportunities at local shelters and nursing homes or through any local church or non-profit group.
Whatever you decide to do for your holidays, have fun and enjoy them. Focus on taking care of yourself and do what makes you happy. If you are happy, your energy will spill onto others.
